'New Works' is an original 50-minute continuous work composed by Andrew Murray. Having spent the last decade writing contemporary originals and jazz standard arrangements for big band, 'New Works' sees Murray utilising these skills in a song-writers context. Murray presents on a large-ensemble scale, songs he has written concerning defeat, confusion, fear, loss and death, all played out with the drama and passion that only big band orchestration has to offer.

I’ve had the great pleasure of following the artistic development of Andrew Murray since 2005, when I met this incredibly talented musician during a residency in Perth with WAYJO, where he was an enthusiastic young valve trombonist and aspiring arranger/composer. Watching and listening to him mature over the years, from his very first arrangements for big band to this most impressive recording, has been an absolute joy.
Two wonderful vocalists, a burning rhythm section, virtuosic soloists and a tight
(but by no means sterile) horn section propel the music forward through a weaving and constantly evolving narrative that only gets better and better with repeated listening.
The force holding it all together and leading the way is Andrew Murray, his skills as a writer as well as bandleader here fully on display.
Andrew Murray’s breadth of knowledge is remarkable, and his seemingly effortless transitions between styles and genres are so natural sounding that it’s easy to forget the amount of talent, expertise and artistic vision required to pull it off successfully.
Andrew’s technique and ingenuity are enhanced by his honesty, soulfulness and an underlying sense of melancholy that pervades the entire album.
This is soulful, honest music that touches you emotionally and at the same time it breaks new ground in the art form of composing and arranging for large jazz ensemble.
Bob Brookmeyer, who Andrew got to work with while studying in Europe, would have been extremely proud.
